What Does Strength Mean and How do You Identify It?

  • Posted on October 17, 2010 at 10:51 pm
Strength comes in all forms!

Strength comes in all forms!

When you think of strength, do you see a weight lifter lifting a barbell? Do you think of the person who has just survived a rough illness? What about the single mother who is raising two children? There are all different types of strengths out there, but each one of them are made up of the same ingredients.

What three ingredients combine to give you strength?

  1. Talents – talents are innate
  2. Skills – skills are learned
  3. Knowledge – knowledge is learned

Signs of a Strength:
S = Success
I = Instinct
G = Growth
N = Needs

What does a strength look like to you?
It looks consistent, with a near-perfect performance.

What do one of your strengths actually feel like to you?

  • When you do it, you feel effective – the S in sign
  • Before you do it, you actively look forward to it – the I in sign
  • When you are doing it, you feel inquisitive and focused – the G in sign
  • After you have done it, you feel fulfilled and authentic – the N of sign

So, to identify your own strengths, pay close attention to how specific activities make you feel. Your feelings reveal your strengths.

What It Means to Get In The Game

  • Posted on October 16, 2010 at 10:36 pm

A lot of my time has been spent perusing the Internet and reading what others have said that is inspirational, educational – something that means something to me and what I am trying to do in life. While on Twitter, I came across Billy Cox, who I have found to be very inspirational. He is a compelling motivational leader that finds great enjoyment in his personal accomplishments as well as his professional achievements. One of his motivational articles is What It Means to Get in The Game and I have attached it below for you to read.

Over the years many individuals have asked me what it really means to get in the game. For me, the answer is pretty simple.

To Get in the Game means taking responsibility for your future. It means getting clear about what you want, developing a plan for your most important goals, and taking massive action each and every day. It also means consistently raising your bar and raising your standards. It means controlling your attitude, facing your fears and staying relentlessly focused on your goals and dreams.

When you’re In The Game it means you’re the kind of person who makes every second count. You understand that the game of life has no time-outs and no overtimes. You only get one chance to play this game.

You may be wondering “Why should I want to get in the game?” Think about it…Why should you want to be in the game?

Well, let me ask you this. Have you ever seen anyone make a shot from the bench or catch a touchdown from the sidelines? Of course not…it can’t happen. Just as a superstar athlete can’t make a shot fro the bench, you can’t be a top producer or a successful business owner by sitting at home and waiting for someone to call and buy your products or services. In order to have any chance at winning, you gotta get off the bench and into the game.

So, the question you gotta ask yourself is…at what level do I want to play? Do I want to wait on the sidelines of life or do I want to win?

To win the game you must first unlock the door to your unlimited potential. This starts by deciding what you really want and then making a clear conscious decision that you’re going to make it happen, no matter what, that’s it, period. Too many people are waiting on the sidelines of life, they are walking on the edge of the ledge. They are not committed, therefore anything that comes along can knock them off track. Sometimes you gotta take a giant leap and leave yourself no outs.

Getting in the Game starts with making a decision. But decisions without action are only good intentions. So, any decision must be backed up by massive action.

Too many people say “Someday when everything is perfect, then I’m going to really, really, really get in the game.” They are waiting for the next degree, until the kids get out of school, or the new marketing plan gets into place.

They have no purpose and therefore they spend most of their time focusing on the little things that don’t mean anything to their long-term success. They come up with excuses and rationalizations to justify their lack of achievement. However, procrastination and rationalization are the biggest killers of success…and the road called “someday” always leads to a town called “nowhere.”

The question I have for you today is…Are you at a turning point in your life? Are you prepared to take responsibility for your future? If so, I challenge you now to make a clear unequivocal decision that you’re going to do whatever it takes to get off the sidelines of life and into the game.

So, the bottom line is, there is no better time than the present to Get in the Game. If you are ready to get started I recommend the following:

Step 1) Get clear about what you really want. Clarity is power. Leaders have it and followers are looking for it. Most people don’t have a clear target of what they are shooting for. Therefore, they never wind up achieving anything of real significance.

You get clear about what you want by making a list of everything you want to achieve personally and professionally in the next 5-10 years. Many people overcomplicate this part, but it is really pretty simple. There is no right or wrong way to do it. They key is to start writing.

So get out a pen and paper and take 5 to 10 minutes to write down everything you an imagine that you would like to be, do, or have. Let your imagination run wild and pretend that anything is possible.

Step 2) Discover your purpose and ignite your passion. Most people wander around aimless and hopeless feeling sorry for themselves and wondering why nothing seems to go their way. They have no purpose and therefore they have no passion.

Purpose and passion don’t just appear, you have to seek them out. You find your purpose by writing down “why” you want to accomplish your goals. Knowing the reasons “why” you are working is a tremendous motivator. This will give you the passion to make your dreams a reality.

Take time now to write down “why” you want to achieve each of the goals you wrote on Step 1.

Step 3) Get a plan of action. You do this by listing some simple steps you can take today. Taking small baby steps will get you moving in the right direction. This will give you momentum which will give you the confidence to take more action.

Step 4) Take massive action. The key to any plan is to take action. Procrastination is the major source of stress and dissatisfaction. It will steal your dreams and leave you wounded on the sidelines. Successful people are willing to take massive action each and every day until their goal is attained.

Understand up front that you can’t win every game. We all have those times when we get sidetracked and lose our momentum. This is why I recommend reviewing your goals regularly. This will keep you clearly focused and on target.

As you review your goals, always make slight adjustments where necessary. If you were shooting a baske3tball and kept missing you wouldn’t quit trying, you would simply adjust your shot and keep shooting until you got it right.

Remember that winning takes purpose, passion, perserverence, and practice. So, be passionate about what you do, practice your game a little each and every day, keeping swinging and eventually youwill achieve the results you desire.

What are Indispensable Qualities of a Leader?

  • Posted on October 14, 2010 at 11:08 pm

There are many different qualities that a leader possesses. Are you a leader? Do you wish you were a leader? Can you become a leader? Well, I don’t know if you are a leader, I am sure you wish you were a leader, and I am confident you can enhance your skills that can help you become a leader. Here are some qualities that a leader has, as adapted from John C. Maxwell:

Character: Be a Peace of the Rock

  • Actions are the real indicator of character
  • Talent is a gift, but character is a choice
  • Character brings lasting success with people
  • Strong character is the foundation on which to build success

Charisma: The first impression can seal the deal.

Commitment: It separates Doers from Dreamers.

  • Look at how you spend your time, are you really committed or do you just say you are?
  • Know what’s worth dying for.
  • Practice the Edison method. make your plans public, then you might be more committed to follow through.

Communication: Without it, you travel alone.

  • Simplify your message – It’s not what you say, but also how you say it.
  • Really care about your audience.
  • Show the truth – Believe what you say, live what you say.
  • Seek a response – the goal of all communication is action.

Competence: If you build it, they will come.

  • Show up every day and come ready to work.
  • Keep learning, growing, and improving.
  • Follow through with excellence.
  • Accomplish more than expected.

Discernment: Put an end to unsolved mysteries.

  • Effective leaders need discernment, although even good leaders don’t display it all the time.

Focus: The sharper it is; the sharper you are.

  • The keys are priorities and concentration.
  • A leader who knows what his priorities are but lacks concentration knows what to do but never gets it done.,
  • If he has concentration, but no priorities, he has excellence without progress.
  • But when he harnesses both, he has potential to achieve great things.

Generosity: Your candle loses nothing when it lights another.

  • Be grateful for what you have.
  • Put people first.

  • You ahve to be silent to listen.
  • Both words are formed with the same letters.
    S-I-L-E-N-T
    L-I-S-T-E-N

Passion: Take this life and love it.

  • “Concentrate on what you do well, and do it better than anybody else.” ~ John Schnatter

Positive Attitude: If you believe you can, you can.

  • Your attitude is your choice.
  • Your attitude determines your actions.
  • Your people are a mirror of your attitude.
  • Maintaining a good attitude is easier than regaining one.

  • Anticipate problems.
  • Accept the truth.
  • See the big picture.
  • Handle one thing at a time.
  • Don’t give up on a major goal when they’re down.

  • They like to feel special, so sincerely conpliment them.
  • They want a better tomorrow, so show them hope.
  • They desire direction, so navigate for them.
  • They are selfish, so speak to their needs first.
  • They get low emotionally, so encourage them.
  • They want success so help them win.

Responsibility: If you won’t carry the ball, you can’t lead the team.

Security:Competence never conpensates for insecurity.

Self-discipline: The first person you lead is you.

Servanthood: To get ahead, put others first.

  • Who you are determines who you attract.
  • Who you are determines the success of your organization.
  • If you want your organization to grow, you have to remain teachable.

Vision: You can seize only what you can see.

We all have amazing qualities within our genetic makeup. We know that we are capable of amazing things. Upon looking at the above qualities, I know that if I strive to be the best person I can be and serve others, I can be an amazing leader. It all starts with me – if I can lead myself – I can lead others. I am a leader, what about you?

Did you know that you can use social media to learn more about yourself and get more involved with your clients and communities?

Here are some simple steps that you can utilize to get the most of the social media experience and grow your business.

  1. Monitor Conversations
There are many free ways to monitor what people are saying about your company through social media, including the following:
Google Alerts – Google Alerts will send you a daily digest email anytime your search terms come up in blogs, news, or other websites.
Social Mention- Social Mention monitors 100+ social media properties directly including: Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, YouTube, Digg, Google, etc. You can have your mentions emailed to you daily.
Twitter Search- If you want to know what people are saying, you can set up a Twitter Search in Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, or just keep a RSS feed in your feed reader using Twitter search results. Include searches for your company, business owner, or unique product name.
  2. Keep up to date on your industry
    *  current events and news
    *  company reactions to industry news
    *  you can reformulate your next announcements and advertising to boost the confidence in your company
  3. Give Great Customer Service
Answer questions right on your page. Give answers to questions and shows potential clients you are readily available to help as well as provide an answer to a question that other clients may want to ask.
  4. Provide Emergency Updates
Customer Service is never more important than during times of crisis.
  5. Gain Customer Feedback & Opinion
You can also query your followers to ask them their opinion.
  6. More Positive Information to the Top
Reputation management via social media can be a great way to boost positive information about your business to the top of search results in an attempt to get negative results off the list.
  7. Drive Traffic to your Website
You can post your blog articles on Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, and social bookmarking sites, which should help drive visitors to your post and then onward to your main site for products and services.
  8. Create a Reference Library
Use sites like Delicious to bookmark all of your social mentions for future reference.

Most of these tips utilize free resources. As we all know, advertising expenses can quickly eat up your bottom line. If you utilize what is out there, there are other ways to get something accomplished, you just have to use some initiative to decide how they are going to work for you and your business.

Encouragement for your day!

  • Posted on October 11, 2010 at 10:24 pm

Okay, as I sit here reading things I have found on the Internet, I ran across some statistics that should make you stop and think a little.

The question is: What makes it possible for people who might seem ordinary to achieve great things?

  • FACT: More than 50% of all CEOs of Fortune 500 companies had a C or C- average in college.
  • FACT: Nearly 75% of all U.S. Presidents were in the bottom half of their school classes.
  • FACT: More than 50% of all millionaire entrepreneurs never finished college.
  • THEY ALL HAD PASSION, IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE!

Now, as I sit here and think about these facts, (1) I had between an A and B+ average in college, (2) I was in the top half of my high school class (of about 500), and (3) I finished and have an MBA ~ AND I have the passion to achieve my goals! With this in mind, there is no end to the possibilities. At least that is my thoughts. :-)

Business Ettiquette Tips for Social Media

  • Posted on October 10, 2010 at 10:33 pm

Now that Social Media has become the norm in our marketing efforts, it is only right that we have business ettiquette for Social Media, right? Check out these tips to use for your social media marketing efforts:

  1. Fill out your online profiles completely with information about you and your business.
  2. Use a different profile or account for your personal connections.
  3. Create a section on your main profile detailing who you are seeking to befriend and ask that visitors abide by that information.
  4. Offer information of value.
  5. Don’t approach strangers and ask them to be friends with you just so you can then try to sell them on your products or services.
  6. Pick a screen name that represents you and your company well.
  7. Don’t send out requests for birthdays, invitations to play games, or other time wasters for those using the site.
  8. Don’t put anything on the internet that you don’t want your future boss, current client, or potential clients to read.
  9. Check out the people who want to follow you or be your friend.
  10. If someone doesn’t want to be your friend, accept their decision gracefully.
  11. Never post when you’re overly tired, jet lagged, intoxicated, angry or upset.
  12. Compose your posts, updates or tweets in a word-processing document so you can check spelling and grammar before you send them.

I know that I definitely need to work on number 11. Many times I find myself posting when it is 10:23 p.m. and I am pretty exhausted – i.e., like tonight – just wanted to share. :-)

Do’s and Don’ts of PowerPoint Presentations

  • Posted on October 9, 2010 at 9:36 pm
Welcome to Powerpoint on PowerPoint

PowerPoint Presentations

We have all been in meetings where the PowerPoint presentation was not very good – or the person read straight from the slides. So what would have made the meeting better?

Don’ts:

  1. Don’t be all over the place with the font size, especially not on the same page.
  2. Don’t complete the thought on one slide with more than seven bullets. If it is going to take more than seven, go to the next slide and show Cont’d at the top.
  3. Don’t have too much animation because it distracts the viewer from the point you are trying to make.

Do:

  1. The font size should be 44 point for headings and 28 point for bullet points.
  2. Limit the number of fonts within the presentation (maximum of 2 per slide).
  3. Use your company branding for your presentation background.
  4. Avoid vertical lettering because it is difficult to read.
  5. Keep it simple and have a maximum of seven bullet points (key words only) to each slide – these are only prompts for you to expand on.
  6. When appropriate, use cartoons, symbols, graphs and pictures to illustrate a message instead of using words.
  7. Be prepared with the content. Know what your PowerPoint presentation says ahead of time so you don’t have to read from the slides.

By following these short tips, you can create a good meeting that everyone will enjoy.
