People hear what we say, but they see what we do – and seeing is believing!

When we talk about values, we’re just sitting on a fortune. The more we practice them, the more gold we set free.

The Game Plan

  • Posted on September 24, 2010 at 10:47 pm

Say-So Behavior

1. Play by the Rules

2. Don’t wait for someone else to make all the calls.

3. Go for singles rather than home runs.

4. Treat everyone like a top draft choice.

5. Let everyone hold the trophy.

Just some great thoughts to live by. We all have stressful lives and have to have a “Game Plan” to help us get through those days. If you play by the rules and do what you are supposed to do, you won’t have to wait for someone else to make all the calls. If you are waiting to make that big home run, just think of all of the singles you have missed along the way! If you treat everyone like they are a top draft choice, you will have made their day and given them that extra boost of confidence to make it a few steps further. Share the trophy with everyone! It feels better to give than to receive. Remember that – so what if you were the one that got the recognition for it – don’t forget, more than likely, you wouldn’t have gotten there without there help!

Simple Truths about Life – Linda Ellis

  • Posted on September 22, 2010 at 6:24 pm

Ran across this truly inspirational poem the other day and thought I would share. It really made me think about everything that is going on in my life on a different level.

Simple Truths About Life
by: Linda Ellis

There is an unspoken balance that time has clearly explained
between what I’ve lost over the years and all that I have gained.

Every trait that I surrender as I “slowly” lose my youth
is replaced with a life’s lesson traded for…a Simple Truth.

These truths I’ve learned from things I’ve done and places I’ve been…
What I’d give to take them back with me and live my life again.

I’ve learned it is much easier to speak only what is true,
because lies are like boomerangs, they will soon come back to you.

I’ve learned that possessions do not determine your wealth
and that plastic credit cards are “debtrimental” to your health.

I’ve learned that when you lose someone who is part of who you are…
time will surely heal the wound, but it won’t erase the scar.

I’ve learned it is okay to answer “no” with strong tenacity
for even a large, porous sponge reaches it’s capacity.

I’ve learned that success should not be measured in what you will buy or own,
but in the pride you feel in the person you’re with…when you are all alone.

I’ve learned that “less is more” is absolutely true…with too much of what you don’t need,
it’s hard to find what you do!

I’ve learned that words are permanent; hearts cannot be broken
and saying “I’m Sorry” cannot retrieve angry words that I have spoken.

I’ve learned not to rely on first impressions for things aren’t always as they seem.
Sometimes the very smallest person is the best one on the team.

I’ve learned that there are certain things that may never be fully understood
for life isn’t always fair…but it’s still pretty darn good!

Sometimes we have such a hard time with the things that really shouldn’t be questioned. If we just have a little faith, things will fall into place. It is amazing the wealth of knowledge we have obtained over the years – and yes – they have definitely been life lessons – The Simple Truth. Often times the Simple Truth is staring us right in the face but we just don’t see it until much later. I hope you enjoyed the poem!

If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it.
If you don’t ask, the answer is always no.
If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.

Marketing Plan – What about a Social Media Plan?

  • Posted on September 22, 2010 at 7:47 am

Marketing is a totally different field now-a-days since social media has come along. You used to be able to just place an ad in the newspaper about a special, a sale, or even a new company. Now – times have definitely changed. Our customers, clients, patients, whatever we want to call them, are just a click away?!?

For those who are just starting that climb into the technology of today, and are trying to figure out how to go about getting on this roller coaster, here are some tips to get you started…

  • Actively listen and observe before getting started
  • Esstablish clear objectives and success metrics
  • Evaluate opportunities through your unique strategic lens
  • Create a unifying concept or theme (make sure your business cards, letterhead, labels all portray the same theme)
  • Construct your social marketing architecture
  • Develop a plan for monitoring and responding to customer discussions
  • Roll out an integrated earned and paid media marketing plan
  • Nurture your fans and community
  • Measure against objectives and optimize continuously.

Social Media is an excellent way to get your name out there. It is crucial that you use it to its maximum potential.

If you need help, just send me an email at info@virtuallyefficient.com and I will try my best to help you get started on this technology coaster that we all find ourselves on.

Cry for Help – Children Unlimited of Family Service Center of South Carolina

“In this life we cannot always do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” ~ Mother Teresa

I urge you to take a minute to read this post very carefully. For some of you who know me, you know that I work  for a nonprofit agency in Columbia, SC called Family Service Center. Family Service Center of SC is a private, nonprofit, family service agency. We have several different programs which include Dental Clinics, Adult/Dislocated Worker WIA, Youth WIA, Consumer Credit Counseling Services, and Children Unlimited.

The Children Unlimited program of FSC is dedicated to the adoption of children with special needs in South Carolina.  Children Unlimited was founded in 1977 by adoptive parents, social workers, and concerned citizens whose philosophy is every child deserves a forever family.  Today our mission has not wavered as we continue to provide permanent life plans for vulnerable children and families.  To say they simply deserve a safe and loving home is not enough…we must ensure it.

For 20 years, Children Unlimited has provided Post Adoption Services to vulnerable children and their families with a block grant and a lot of fundraising. Tragically, we learned last week that the Post Adoption Services grant will end October 30, 2010 due to the extensive budget cuts within the Department of Social Services. We need immediate financial assistance for Children Unlimited to perform these post adoption services.

What does Children Unlimited Do?

Children Unlimited learned long ago that it is not enough to just place a child with a family for adoption. We must support the new family system as well. Special needs adoption is different from “infant adoption.” Children in the foster care system have been traumatized. They have endured physical, emotional and often sexual abuse in their biological families. They also experience attachment and bonding issues due to multiple care givers and frequent moves. Because of this, they do not feel worthy of love and have a great deal of anger and grief to work through in order to become “whole” again. This make take several years to accomplish and Children Unlimited has an array of services to assist families in maintaining stability during this difficult time. Our staff will travel to a family’s home and help them through a crisis to keep them together today…and for the future.

Our additional support services necessary for families adopting children from the foster care system include: online resources for adoptive families which will enhance stability and information access; weekend youth retreats to normalize the adoptive child’s perception while improving self-confidence and communication skills; parent retreats to provide specific educational workshops and support, and respite which will alleviate family stress by giving both the child and the family a break. Simply put, we help adoptive families meet the complex needs of their children so they do not re-enter the foster care system or get placed out of the home in residential facilities.

In the past year, Children Unlimited’s Post Adoption Services have:

  • Provided Intake, Assessment & Referral services for 131 families
  • Provided 2 Children’s weekend retreats serving 31 children
  • Provided 1 Parent Support Weekend retreat serving 17 adoptive parents
  • Facilitated 1 Adoptive Family Retreat serving 17 families (57 people)
  • Coordinated 341 days of respite for 91 children
  • Provided 1 Educational Conference for 17 Adoptive Parents
  • Provided Extensive Case Management for 9 children at risk of disruption
  • Provided 3 Love & Logic Trainings for 38 parents (10 hour curriculum)
  • Provided 2 day camps for 29 kids so parents could attend trainings
  • Provided 2 CU Newsletters and reached over 500 adoptive parents
  • Recruited and Utilized 484 Volunteer hours equaling a savings of $9,801.

Children Unlimited is the only provider of these services statewide for South Carolina. If we aren’t helping, then who will?
