How does Setting Goals Really Help?

  • Posted on August 30, 2010 at 10:52 pm

Not only will you feel like you are accomplishing a lot more work, but you will:

  • Build relationships at work when you align your goals with those of your boss and the organization.
  • Build your self-confidence as you achieve your goals.
  • It will motivate you.
  • You will be able to separate what is important from what is irrelevant.
  • You will better understand what is important for you to achieve.
  • You will be more satisfied with your life when you sit in your rocking chair when you are 90 years old.

I definitely want to be satisfied at the age of 90 (as long as I make it there)! I want to know that I did the best that I could and I have no questions about whether I could have done more or done it any better. What about you?

Positive Attitudes Under Any Circumstance

  • Posted on August 29, 2010 at 10:19 pm

Sometimes we each need to take a moment and look at what is going on in our lives and around us. If we just stop and think, our attitude plays a large part in how we feel or even how we react. No, not everything always works out the way we think it should, but everything is a lesson learned! Check out these tips for having a positive attitude under any circumstance…

  • Focus on the future (rather than the past), with whatever challenge you face, including conflict. Instead of worrying about who did what and who is to blame, focus on where you want to be and what you want to do.
  • Focus on the solution whenever you’re faced with a difficulty. Do not waste your time and energy reflecting on the problem, whose fault it is or why it happened. As soon as you think in terms of solutions, you become a positive, proactive person.
  • Look for the good in things and the positive side of any situation.
  • Look for the valuable lessons in things; if something goes wrong, or you make a mistake, what can you learn from it?

All too often, we don’t realize that our attitude affects those around us and we chose what kind of attitude we are going to have, not let the situation govern our mood. Take a minute this week to ponder what you can do to put forward a positive attitude in all situations you encounter.

“The greater the loyalty of a group toward the group, the greater is the motivation among the members to achieve the goals of the group, and the greater the probability that the group will achieve its goals.”

It is amazing the kind of people we are fortunate to surround ourselves with. Although I met Maggie Self through her sister, Tuck Self, I would have to say it was almost a kindred spirit kind of thing. Maggie is the founder of Children of Spirit. The love and passion she has for children and their growth is amazing. She truly cares about who this little person is going to be and what their aspirations are. Being a former school teacher, she has had a vast amount of experience seeing the growth of the adolescent and what role the environment plays on that growth. Maggie has charged Children of Spirit with serving children, parents, caregivers, educators, and communities with offering a wide variety of services to those who seek alternatives to traditional ideas, methods, and systems of parenting and caregiving. Children of Spirit empowers children to be who they are and to develop their own natural gifts instead of living in the shadows of others.

One memorable time was when I met Maggie for a late afternoon lunch and I brought my son along. He is 10 years old and she sat at the table and colored with him while we chatted. It was really nice because instead of it being a business lunch where adults talk and the children are told to be quiet, he was included in the coversations that we had. Not long after that lunch, he was asking when we were going to see Ms. Maggie again.

Some of the services offered are tutoring, child mentoring, and family coaching. One of their newest services is Laughter Yoga. Although new to me, I attended a laughter yoga session and was so relaxed when I left. I would recommend everyone check it out. It is even offered to children because it helps to relieve stress, boost immune systems, and increase endorphins. Wouldn’t it be great if when everyone got home at night for family time, they weren’t so tired and stressed from homework and their long days? You know they say that laughter is the best medicine!

When you get a minute, check out Children of Spirit and what is offered. You will be in awe of what passion she has for our children!

Managing Your Time & Your Life

  • Posted on August 22, 2010 at 8:59 pm

In my spare time, I love to read. The genre has changed over the years, but it still expands my mind! Currently, I am reading Hyrum W. Smith’s book, The 10 Natural Laws of Successful Time and Life Management: Proven Strategies for Increased Productivity and Inner Peace. It is truly an amazing book. Hyrum S. Smith was the founder of Franklin Quest Company, which later merged with Steven R. Covey’s Covey Leadership Center to form Franklin Covey.

The book breaks down the Natural Laws into two oparts and how they can be applied to give you increased control over your life. Just to get you excited so you will check out the book, I am going to give you what Mr. Smith chose to help better manage his time and his life…

Part I: Managing Your Time

Law 1: You control your life by controlling your time.
Law 2: Your governing values are the foundation of personal success and fulfillment.
Law 3: When your daily activities reflect your governing values, you experience inner peace.
Law 4: To reach any significant goal, you must leave your comfort zone.
Law 5: Consistent daily planning leverages time and increases focus.

Part II: Managing Your Life

Law 6: Your behavior is a reflection of what you truly believe.
Law 7: You satisfy needs when your beliefs are in line with reality.
Law 8: Negative behaviors are overcome by changing incorrect beliefs.
Law 9: Your self-esteem must ultimately come from within.
Law 10: Give more and you’ll have more.

Now, I realize there are many other natural laws that he didn’t reflect on, but feel that these 10 that he did, make me feel a resemblance to him. Check out his book, it might give you new ideas that will help you to lead a more productive and fulfilling life.
